São Lourenço do Barrocal is a rural retreat sensitive to the vastness of the land in which it sits and to its family legacy. Located in the beautiful landscape of Monsaraz, in Portugal, it has rejuvenated a 19th-century ‘monte alentejano’, a small farming village, as a remarkable luxury hotel set amidst ancient olive trees, holm oaks, and vineyards. Within a 780-hectare estate that has been in the same family for over 200 years, its working and social heart lies in the ‘monte’, where the essence of its simplicity and the rhythms of the rural daily life that have always marked its existence in a productive farm estate are preserved. To celebrate its 200th anniversary, São Lourenço do Barrocal enhances its status as an organic agricultural estate by launching simple loose leaf teas, orange and lemon preserves, a pepper paste, olive oil biscuits and olives. The estate will thus add new products to an already varied selection of wines – reds, whites and rosé – olive oil and meat. Still under development is wine vinegar in an oak barrel, the product of converting the vines to organic farming.
