With locations in Scottsdale, Dallas and Houston, Finer Jewelry offers only the most high quality, GIA-certified wholesale diamonds and jewelry with the bespoke touch of a private jeweler. Below, Shimon Himovich of Finer Jewelry answers all of our burning questions — from how much to spend on an engagement ring to how to find out her ring size — about finding the one of all rings for your special lady.

First things first – How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
Finer Jewelry: This decision is both emotional and rational. You have two major things to consider:

  1. Your lady’s expectations.
  2. Your financial situation.

The goal is to find a balance between the two.

Of course, every person’s situation is different. And that’s why it’s important to know where you stand. Do not rely on an outdated two months’ salary rule that was invented by a marketer. A purchase this big should never be rushed or taken lightly. Not only will you decide on the size, style, cut and color of the diamond, you’ll also have to do some research on what she likes.

How important are the Four C’s to consider when engagement ring shopping?
FJ: The Four C’s are very important to understand. Cut, Color, Clarity & Carat weight. It is hard to make an informed decision about buying a diamond without knowing these four essential categories.

How far in advance should you buy a ring?
FJ: We recommend to start creating a custom ring at least 3-5 months before you would like to propose. Getting a small headway on time allows you to not have to make big decisions in a hurry and be able to spend time working with a designer/jeweler to find the perfect stone.

What to do if you don’t know her ring size?
FJ: There are many ways to find out your girlfriend’s ring size: You can ask her, or be sneaky and borrow a ring of hers. If those two options don’t work for you; remember that resizing is always an option.

What are the benefits to working with a private jeweler like Finer Jewelry?
